The Story: The unique feature of UMBVS's weaving is the extra weft ornamentation, known as Kashida, which allows for the distinctive hand loomed horizontal bands of bold color that run across the fabric.

Weavers use both the traditional pit looms for their famous and intricate Kashida style weaving, and have recently been able to purchase two power-looms to make basic fabrics. The Interlocking technique produces a pure band of color while the bobbin which runs the thread horizontally is the same color as the threads running vertically.

The threads are interlocked using the pedal system which ensures the production of strong cloth. Pattu are the traditional products woven in Western Rajasthan.

The weavers of UMBVS concentrate on two types of Pattu:

Bhojasari Pattus have a woven pallu or border, where the motifs form triangles from the base into the centre.

Malani Pattus incorporate a design covering the total surface and strips of pattern running parallel with the pallu.

Over the last decade Urmul Weavers have extended focus from the traditional Pattu products to a range of embroidered and hand woven Kurtas which showcase the intricate Kashida weaving by hand.
