About Me: The Vankars have also dedicated time for a designing course at Kala Raksha Vidhyalaya in Kutch, Gujarat. Their final project for the academy was named “Miri” and it was inspired by the Dhablo weaving method, called ghoontni wherein he placed an extra finger weave over the handloom weaved cloth. This became his specialty and has been his trademark method ever since.

600 years ago, the Marwada community from Rajasthan migrated to the Kutch and are known today for the art of handloom weaving in Gujarat. Traditionally, weavers used hand spun cotton yarn provided by the Ahir and Patel farming communities and the wool provided by the Rabari and Jat pastoral communities. Weaving was a local art, which provided the Kutch communities with blankets, cloth, and traditional dress. Today it is a continuing vibrant tradition that is consumed by both local communities and people around the country and the world.

Kutch weaving as it is known today incorporates a wide range of bright colors and distinct traditional motifs. The unique characteristic of this dominant kutch style of weaving is the skill of creating intricate, stylized motifs by hand picking in thick yarns of wool and cotton. It is said that Kutch hand woven woolen fabrics could keep the wearer warm in winter and cool in summer due to the play of material, weave, moisture and wind.

The Story: Since 22 years or more, the Vankars have learnt & excelled the art of weaving. Hailing from the Kutch community of Marwada Vankar, their master-weaver fathers and his grandfathers have made them pick up this wonderful art. Vankar Kanji’s father was a master weaver associated with the Bhujodi Weaver’s Cooperative. Vankar has 10-15 artisans working alongside him to promote Bhujodi village’s otherwise dying art. In a village of about a few hundreds of weavers, Vankar Kanji creates some of the best hand-woven textiles to keep this fading handicraft alive and be appreciated in the country.

In olden days the weavers would tie-up with the nomadic clan of the Rabaris who would provide dhaaga or thread from woolen fleece from the local sheep and goats that would be used for weaving to be exchanged as shawls and other such necessities. Today, however the materials and their handloom weaving business progressed by incorporating new contemporary and abstract designs and patterns to their textiles. Vankar Kanji abides by the elaborate yet intrinsic fusing of traditional and modern methods but incorporating the insignia of his community; of weaving with hands and working the traditional loom to weave fabrics dipped in warmth and affection. Thereby iterating that time is not the essential factor in the completion of his products.
