Traditional hand embroidered and needle crafted handpainted Kantha Stole from the finest embroidery artisans in West Bengal

About Me: Nakshi Kantha or as ruralfolk call it, Nakshi Katha, is the popular hand embroidery craft form of West Bengal. The word ‘Nakshi’ derives its origin in the Bengali word ‘Naksha’ & “Naksha” means design or pattern. The Nakshi Kantha is a unique creation in the folk art of the Bengalis. The beautiful needle-work is done by rural women on a piece of cloth or different fabrics. To choose cloth, decide on the types of thread to use, set designs charcoal and pencil, and then stitching, everything is carried out by the women themselves.

Using a meaningful motif, wide open floral designs are an ancient symbol of India. The petals and the leaves denoting welfare is a symbol of auspiciousness and the leaves and petals, the symbols of the four directions.

The Story: Kantha Embroidery was born in erstwhile East Bengal, present day West Bengal and Bihar. Essentially rural craft and art, it is a form of patched, quilted and vividly embroidered textile made entirely out of used cloth.

The original craft process involved layering worn clothes together and binding them with variations of the simple running stitch. This process is called Kantha quilting. Even though the craft uses only one kind of stitch, it is the numerous variations and intricacy with which it is executed that make the art beautiful. Motifs used in embroidery may be geometric or very elaborate in nature.

The thread for this craft was drawn out of the borders of the used cloth. It is a simple running stitch made on the edges. When five to six layers of the cloth were embroidered together it formed a quilt. Much more fewer layers of the cloth is used to make apparel and accessories for other purposes.
The outer layers of the cloth comprises of white or light colored clothes which made the embroidery perceptible. Depending on the use and pattern of stitching and layering, the finished creations are known as Lepkantha, Sujni Kantha & Nakshi Kantha.
