Hand Blockprinted Ajrakh Earthy Brown Rust Gajji Silk Saree

About Me: Using resist and mordanting techniques on natural dyes coupled with the rhythmic placements of the blocks, the craftsmen present a work of art, enmeshed in beauty and skill. The resist block printed designs on an Ajrakh draw the viewer in to a complex world of design juxtapositions in a sheer flow of mathematical poetry. The ajrakh textiles with dominant hues of rich crimson and deep indigo is a name derived from ‘azrak’, which means blue arabic and persian. This printing art has survived the passage of centuries and the process has much or more remained the same - lengthy, tedious and technical. Master craftsman Sohail Khatri, who is from the Khatri community works at the grassroot level with Ajrakh artisans in the Gujarat region to nurture this craft form to create magical designs on rich fabrics such as cotton mal, habotai silk & more. Generations of Khatri families use the ajrakh method of printing. The Khatris have developed a feel for the contemporary market and now ajrakh yardage, kurta sets, furnishings, scarves can be bought.

The Story: The cloth of the inhabitants of Sindh, an art and age old tradition is called Ajrakh. Ajrakh was born and has existed in Sindh since the time of Mohenjodaro Civilization. In arabic, Ajrakh spells out a meaning "Indigo". After the partition of India the production of Ajrak was carried out in Kutch, Rajasthan and Gujarat which were once the easternmost portions of Sindh.

Ajrakh printing is done by hand, only using wooden blocks as wood absorbs the colors in a better manner than any other material. The artisans use Sheesham Wood Blocks for the primary stage of printing and for the final stage of printing on the fabric, Teak Wood Blocks are used. The ajrakh print and colors are best represented on Cotton, however to serve urban markets, silk is also used as a fabric for printing.

The traditional Ajrakh colors are Red, Black & Indigo. Yellows, Shades of Orange and Rust are now used to give the products a more contemporary look. The Ajrakh printing process is considered intuitive to the Ajrakh Artisans. The authentic Ajrakh print is printed on both sides of the fabric, a method known as "resist printing". This printing form is completely done with the use of hand-carved wooden blocks and hand by the artisan.

Several different blocks are used to give the print a characteristic repeating pattern. The prints are exquisite and ar geometric in nature; and they echo the principles of Sufism, which was widely followed in Sindh. The geometric patterns use the concept of symmetry which are symbolic of cosmic processes that are omni-directional.
