The Story: Weaving is a process of fabric production in which two distinct sets of yarns are interlaced at right angles to each other to form a fabric or cloth. Artisans use two types of handlooms namely - frame loom or pit loom to weave different yarns and fabric. The first process for weaving is called Warping where the artisans prepare the vertical threads by using a warping frame- a frame with sticks on the side that is usually a meter wide.
The next process is heddling which is a very important part of the loom. One can think of it as a bar that holds many needles in a row. It helps the weaver to pass each and every single warp thread through.
The final step is spooling and preparing the design of the final fabric. Where the design is complex, it might require over 30 heddles to achieve the pattern, so to overcome the limitation of the number of heddles a loom can carry (usually in the country a maximum of 8), the weavers use makeshift heddles that “pick up” the design. Once everything is ready, the spool is placed into what is called a “shuttle”- a little boat-like wooden device - which is then passed back and forth through the weave to create the horizontal threads of the fabric.
