The Story: The creativity of Ikat begins with the yarn, even before the dyeing process. This is because every single piece of yarn in Ikat carries on it detail of the larger pattern that the eye sees on the finished cloth.

The word Ikat, (pronounced as ee-kaht) has its origins in the Malaysian word 'mengikat,' literally meaning 'to tie’. This is because the threads are tied in rubber seals or wax (or other dye resistant materials), dyed, sorted, rewrapped and dyed again until it forms a proper pattern when it is woven on the loom. Having dyed the yarn, it is painstakingly arranged according to the exact configuration of the final pattern. This inaccurate color distribution on the yarn results in an enchanting look of blurred edges in the finished designs.

In warp Ikat the patterns are clearly visible in the warp threads on the loom even before the plain colored weft is introduced to produce the fabric. In weft Ikat it is the weaving or weft thread that carries the dyed patterns which only appear as the weaving proceeds. In weft ikat the weaving proceeds much slower than in warp ikat as the passes of the weft must be carefully adjusted to maintain the clarity of the patterns.

Tigira in Nuapatna disctrict of Orissa in present day Odisha, has been traced to be one of the oldest centres of Ikat weaving industry in India. Another handloom centre developed when weavers from Nuapatna district migrated to Bhubaneshwar and Sambhalpur. Silk sarees fromthese districts in Orissa are known for their exquisite character.
