The Story: Bhagalpuri Sarees are extremely light weight and have a very smooth texture. They are considered especially comfortable because of their light weight and net-like texture. The weaving tradition in Bhagalpur (a city in Bihar state of India along the banks of the river Ganga or Ganges) goes back over a century with around 30,000 handloom weavers present here. There are about 25,000 handlooms in existence in Bhagalpur. Bhagalpuri Silk weaving peaked during the Mauryan Age but is known to have existed ever since Vedic times in Indian history. Weaving in Bhagalpur is an art that has been passed on for generations. Working on large wooden pit-style looms found across the city that have been with families for decades, parents share the secrets of crafting fine Tussar Silk scarves and sarees.
