Handwoven Tie & Dyed Chevron Pink & Blue Sheer Tussar & Matka Noil Silk Saree - A handwoven tie & dyed Saree in Sheer Tussar Matka Noil Silk fabric; tie & dyed using rope & clamp tying shibori technique

About Me: Amrit Das at Indiascape focuses on reviving Indian textiles & crafts and introducing them in a new avatar to the urban mainstream market. Indiascape features products designed using hand techniques, making each product only one of its kind. The products are designed for the young urban contemporary market, open to experimental, innovative, new and unconventional products and the collection uses the art of Hand Painting and Innovative Tie & Dye.

For Shibori the cloth can be bound, stitched, folded, twisted, clamped and compressed. Each method that is used is done in harmony with the type of cloth to create beautiful surface designs. Fabrics have all different characteristics so the method must be chosen wisely to achieve the desired effect.

The special characteristic of Shibori resist is a soft- or blurry-edged pattern. The effect is quite different from the sharp-edged resist obtained with stencil, paste, and wax. With Shibori the dyer works in concert with the materials, not in an effort to overcome their limitations but to allow them full expression. And, an element of the unexpected is always present. The fabrics used vary from handwoven 100% cotton fabrics with self textures such as, Kota Doria with yarn dyed checks, Tussar & Geecha silk & Chanderi Cotton Silk to infuse rich visual textures as a result of tie resist Shibori Craft on the fabric.

The Story: Tie-dyeing is essentially a process of folding or otherwise tying up fabric into a pattern, then blocking dye from coming into contact with the fabric. The "resist" is usually the string, thread or rubber bands. Once the material is dyed and/or over-dyed, the binding materials are removed, and the fabric is rinsed and dried.

The Japanese form of tie-dye, known as Shibori, has been practiced since at least the 8th century, involves labor-intensive techniques including stitching elaborate patterns and tightly gathering the stitching before dyeing, forming intricate designs for kimonos. Another Shibori method is to wrap the fabric around a core of rope, wood or other material, and bind it tightly with string or thread. The areas of the fabric that are against the core or under the binding would remain undyed. In India, 'bandhna' a local term is used, giving rise to the Bandhani fabrics of Rajasthan which have now been a centre for Shibori and tie & dye resist craft forms.

Shibori comes from the word ‘shiboru’ meaning wring, squeeze or press. It is one of the finest techniques of tie and dye. When the cloth is treated with Shibori, it gives a soft or blur like effect. The skilled artisans of Rajasthan add this craft form to bandhani products, whether a dupatta, saree, skirt or a complete salwar kameez to add abstract and neo-geometric designs.
