About Me: The creation of Sanjhi art requires a lot of patience, dedication and talent. Firstly, the stencils are made out of handmade paper preferably using specially designed scissors and then they are placed on the flat earthen surfaces to give it a final finish with special scissors or blades. These paper cuttings are handcut by Mr. Lov Kumar Soni from Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, who has been practicing this craft since he was 13 years old. Mr. Soni has been also awarded the Kamla Devi Chattopadhyay Award, from the Delhi Crafts Council for nurturing this craft form.

The Story: Sanjhi is a tradition of the region of Vraja or Vrindavan in the north-western Indian state of Uttar-Pradesh. Vraja or Vrindavan is known as the Indian God Sri Krishna's homeland. Sanjhi, the art of hand cutting (or stencil cutting) designs on paper, is typical art of Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, home of the god Krishna. Traditionally, the theme of Sanjhi are taken from the God Krishna's stories and are created in stencil which are used to decorate spaces during festive seasons. The cutting process requires lots of skill, concentration and patience, and the fine detail is achieved with specially designed scissors. At a later stage, striding latticework patterns of Mughal motifs and Mughal Jaals in origin as well as more contemporary themes have been introduced to widen this art form.
Rooted in the folk tradition, the practice of Sanjhi Paper Craft was taken over by the Vaishnava temples during the 16th century and developed into a highly refined art form professed by the Brahman priests.
