About Me: Kantha Embroidery was born in erstwhile East Bengal, present day West Bengal and Bihar. Essentially rural craft and art, it is a form of patched, quilted and vividly embroidered textile made entirely out of used cloth.

The original craft process involved layering worn clothes together and binding them with variations of the simple running stitch. This process is called Kantha quilting. Even though the craft uses only one kind of stitch, it is the numerous variations and intricacy with which it is executed that make the art beautiful. Motifs used in embroidery may be geometric or very elaborate in nature.

The thread for this craft was drawn out of the borders of the used cloth. It is a simple running stitch made on the edges. When five to six layers of the cloth were embroidered together it formed a quilt. Much more fewer layers of the cloth is used to make apparel and accessories for other purposes. The outer layers of the cloth comprises of white or light colored clothes which made the embroidery perceptible. Depending on the use and pattern of stitching and layering, the finished creations are known as Lepkantha, Sujni Kantha & Nakshi Kantha.

The Story: Kantha is an indigenous craft hailing from the Indian states of West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar. It started from the little houses and intelligent hands of Bengali housewives living in them who used old and torn ‘kantha’ (Bengali word) meaning rags and converted them into beautiful utility items using the simplest and easiest stitching technique.

The embroidery is being practiced today by millions of women mainly in the districts of Birbhum Burdwan, Hooghly, 24 Parganas North and South and Murshidabad. Though it has evolved into a very commercial craft these days Kantha still maintains a strong cultural and social significance in the Bengali society. Kantha makes you see the beauty in the old, the faded and the torn. It brings forth the aesthetics that even the used things around you can provide. It’s made special with layers of unevenness and the nostalgia of prior use of each layer. It lets you hold on to your memories and yet create new ones.

Kantha basically makes use of the recycling philosophy and kantha products can actually be called "Upcycled" products. Upcycled products in design terms are those whose value increases after being converted into a new product. In the making of the Kantha, the old discarded saris and dhotis are taken and stitched down into one single base layer. The simplest form of stitching i.e. the darning stitch or the running stitch is used which creates a ripple like effect on the fabric. Threads used for embroidery are also taken out from the discarded fabrics itself.

Initially the base fabric and the embroidery were both done in white. Later, a white or a light colored base layer and a more visible embroidery yarn began to be used.

The central motif is generally a hundred and eight petal lotus. It is seen in a number of important Kantha pieces. The other motifs are derived from nature, animals, folk stories, temples, deities and the common everyday objects like pitchers, combs, umbrellas etc. Thus beautiful pieces are created using simple techniques, stitches, motifs and materials.
