Just like the myriad varieties of the beautiful and gorgeous block designs, this craft of Block Printing comes from various gorgeous states of our country. It does not belong to any one particular region. It has imprints from Gujarat in the West and from Andhra Pradesh in the South East. Currently it’s also being practiced in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. And there’s uniqueness in diversity.

A block printed cloth reflects the touch of the human hand, the sensibility and skill of the craftsman; every piece unique. Block printing has become, if one is allowed to say; somewhat of a blockbuster. It’s like a movie everyone enjoys. From being the favourite of the hippies to being loved by college students on their long skirts and kurtas and to being used by the home-makers to adorn their houses with printed designs, it has been appreciated in all spheres. It’s a simple process and it can create intricate designs in rich and vibrant colors in short time periods.

The intricate designs you see on fabric are first skilfully carved out of wood or metal and then they are converted into beautiful designs by their creative placements and use of colors. The main tools of the printer are wooden blocks in different shapes - square, rectangle, oval, round and semi-circular or crescent - and sizes called bunta. Blocks are hand-carved of seasoned teak wood by trained craftsmen. On the bottom face the motifs are engraved with steel chisels of different widths and cutting surface by the carver. Each block has a wooden handle and two to three cylindrical holes drilled into the block for free air passage and also to allow release of excess printing paste. The new blocks are soaked in oil for 10-15 days to soften the grains in the timber. These blocks sometimes have metal over the wood.  The design of the block is drawn on the wooden block and the thin metal strips are pressed onto the design and gently hammered in. After the design is completed the design is checked to see if all the brass strips are of the same height from the wooden base.

If it is a multiple color design the second printer dips his block in color again using the point or guide for a perfect registration to fill in the color. Different dyes are used for silk and cotton. Rapid fast dyes, indigo sol and pigment dyes are cotton dyes. Printing with rapid dyes is a little more complicated as the dyes once mixed for printing have to be used the same day. Standard colors are black, red, orange, brown and mustard, blue hues and yellows.

Blocks are hand-carved of seasoned teak wood by trained craftsmen. On the bottom face the motifs are engraved with steel chisels of different widths and cutting surface by the carver. Brass blocks are used in case of very fine designs and for a high level of clarity in print.

The printing starts form left to right. The color is evened out in the tray with a wedge of wood and the block dipped into the outline color (usually black or a dark color). When the block is applied to the fabric, it is slammed hard with the fist on the back of the handle so that a good impression may register.

The style and motifs of block prints are inspired from the local sources and can be largely grouped as floral, figurative and geometric categories. The designs have large bootas, small bootis, trellis or jal, small border and large borders and sometimes geometrical designs also.

About Me: Also known as Endi or Errandi, Eri is a multivoltine silk spun from open-ended cocoons, unlike other varieties of silk. Eri silk is the product of the domesticated silkworm, Philosamia Ricini that feeds mainly on castor leaves. Ericulture is a household activity practiced mainly for protein rich pupae, a delicacy for the tribal. Resultantly, the Eri cocoons are open-mouthed and are spun.
